Welcome to First Jazz Performance!

In the Kjos Media Player below, you will find MP3s of Rhythm Studies (1-5), the Complete Recording, and a Unison Solo Study. You will also find PDFs of the Improvisation Starter for each tune.

COMPLETE RECORDING (Audio)
Each solo section is played twice:
- The first time, the unison solo is demonstrated by a section of instruments, either brass or woodwinds.
- The second time, a professional musician provides an example of artistic jazz improvisation.

Each tune features a different solo instrument, allowing students to experience a wide range of timbres and styles.

RHYTHM STUDIES (Audio)
Each rhythm study is divided into two lines:
- Line A is a clapping line.
- Line B is a playing line.

Each rhythm is demonstrated at the beginning of the exercise, allowing students to imitate what they hear. Follow the LISTEN, CLAP,and PLAY instructions, as notated in the books.

UNISON SOLO STUDIES (Audio)
These rhythmic section accompaniment grooves are taken from the open solo sections of the charts. Use these tracks to accompany practice of the unison solos, or as accompaniment grooves for the improvisation practice.

IMPROVISATION STARTERS (PDF)
Use these helpful guides to improvise along with the Rhythm Studies and the Unison Solo Studies.
